Negar Kamali
About Me.
Negar relationship with dance began at age three—an inexplicable pull toward the language of movement that would become her native tongue. She started formal training at six under the guidance of Ms. Mercede Kia. This early immersion profoundly shaped her identity, fostering a deep connection between body and mind.
As a multidisciplinary artist, she navigates the intersections of dance, photography, videography, and woodworking, each medium informing and enriching the others. Her academic journey spans from a BA in Architecture to an MFA in Experimental Choreography. Since 2011, her formal teaching of Persianate and Iranian dance forms, alongside contemporary dance, has been both transmission and discovery. Her travels across Iran have profoundly influenced her creative practice, inspiring choreography that reflects the country's diverse geography and rich literary heritage.
Through her work, she contributes to dialogue and collaboration among dancers and choreographers in Iran and across the diaspora. Currently, her research delves into the question: What do we carry when we move? She explores immigration as both wound and wisdom, identity as a fluid performance, and memory as an embodied archive. Her work also engages with sensation as knowledge and temporality as a dance partner.
